British passport & Visa photo specifications & requirements
British passport, visa, citizenship & ID photos can be made from a picture you take with your camera by using our online service or with our mobile passport photo service. We will print them too the exact specification that your government will accept.
| Format(Size) | Two (2) identical photographs must be submitted, They should be 35mm x 45mm in Width and Height. They should show a close up of your face and the top of your shoulders so that your face takes up between 60% - 75% of the face or 29mm to 34mmfrom the chin to the crown of the head. The photo must clearly show the person's facial features in a straight forward position from the tip of the chin to the crown of the head as well as the left and right sides of the face. In the case of voluminous hair, it must be ensured that the head (including the hairstyle) is fully depicted without reducing the size of the face, if possible. The face must be centered in the photo and no more than six months old, to ensure an up to date likeness. |
| Background | The background should be a plain cream or light grey. The background should not have any pattern. The photo should show only the person to be photographed (no other persons or objects in the photo). No shadows must be shown on the background. |
Expression | You need to take the photo with a neutral expression with your mouth closed, not laughing, smiling, frowning and not showing your teeth. With both eyes open, contrived expressions such as raised eyebrows or squinting are not acceptable. |
| Head Position | The head of the person photographed should be neither at an angle nor turned (portrait style). Your head must be square to the camera; your face can not be slightly rotated and or tilted. Your face and eyes must be straight towards the camera so we can see an equal amount of each ear and cheek. |
| Eyes & Line of sight | The person in the photo must look directly into the camera. The eyes must be open and dearly visible and may not be covered by hair or spectacle frames. The camera lens must be at the eye level of the person being photographed , not from above or below |
| Lighting | The face must be evenly illuminated by the flash on the camera. Reflections or shadows on the face as well as red eyes must be avoided. |
| Photo Quality | The photo should be printed on high-quality paper with a print resolution of at least 600 dpi (especially when taken with a digital camera). The photo must be neutral in color and skin tones should appear natural. The photo should have no creases or impurities . Photograph cannot be manipulated, for example, by removing spots or softening lines. Photos must be in color. |
| Wearing Glasses | Please take off your glasses; it will guarantee your photo passing. If you must wear your glasses there cannot be any glare anywhere on the glass and the frame cannot cover any part of your eyes. The eyes must be clearly recognizable (reflections from glasses, tinted glasses or sunglasses are not permitted). |
| Head wear | Generally speaking, head wear is not permitted. Exceptions are possible, especially for religious reasons. In such cases, the face must be visible from the lower tip of the chin to the forehead. No shadows should be visible on the face. |
| Focus/Contrast | The face must be sharply focused in all areas, rich in contrast and clear. |
| Back of photo | The counter signatory should sign and date the back of ONE of the photos with the handwritten statement, "I certify that this is a true likeness of (full name of applicant). |
Infants or very small children who are unable to support themselves should be photographed
lying down from above. Hands, arms, etc. used to support the child should not be visible.

First, I can’t remember the last product review I wrote; it takes a lot to get me to do one but I am making sure that this testimonial gets done right away because the passport service provided by Bruce Hallstrom and Passport Photo Now has been an absolute life-saver for me and my wife. The UK Passport Office’s requirements for a passport photo are so demanding that we faced the threat of sending photos to England with our application package just to have them denied and all monies paid to them CONFISCATED. After a scary experience and wasted weeks with Walgreens who said they knew what they were doing but gave us photos that were rejected by HM Passport Office we searched online and were saved by Bruce & Co. Thank God! In no time at all he spun his magic and our photos were approved and accepted! All for what I consider to be a nominal cost! This is a great service for passport photographs that are a different size from the standard US passport photo. Be sure to attach ACTUAL SIZE photographs to your email when you send them in or they will be rejected as too small.

Unfortunately, applying for a new British passport from the USA has its own unique set of problems beginning with the photos we must supply to HM Passport Office that must be of a very specific size in mm (whereas every single passport photo machine in this country is calibrated in inches!) So what do I do now? I searched online for a solution and found passportphotonow.com, contacted them (Bruce) and found out that if I could supply a good enough JPEG they could convert that into a quality passport photo to satisfy the exacting measurements required. I have a Sony Alpha 5100 with assorted lenses, not the best quality camera on the market for a good portrait but one that should be able to produce what was needed. Dusted off the old SLIK tripod and set up a mini studio, took what I thought were some good enough shots and sent the best one off to PASSPORTPHOTONOW. Bruce tried to make it work but I had relied too much on the telephoto and the result was a distorted face so next I changed lenses, took a few more shots and a day later sent a variety off to Bruce. I'm happy to report he was able to use one of these and produced the desired passport photos. I have a machinists rule (shows mm as well as inches) and applied it to the photos and everything was exactly to spec. Obviously this guy knows what he's doing, let's just hope HM's Passport Office finds them as acceptable as I do. Thank you Bruce, you were helpful and easy to work with, price was a bargain, too.

I get email feedback quickly about the pictures I submit and then within a few days I receive my pictures in the mail I live in Rochester, New York and it is very difficult to find someone to take pictures that fit the requirements for a British Passport photo.
